Ghost in the Rainbow
Published in Paperback by Hats Off Books (December, 2002)
Author: Joan Leslie Woodruff
Average review score:

Best crime fiction of the year
Ghost in the Rainbow is a compulsive read. I couldn't put it down. Because of my own battles with alcoholism and substance abuse, the path the heroine takes touched me deeply and even helped me to confront some of my own demons. That I should be so spiritually and psychologically helped by a book of crime fiction illiustrates how deeply real is Ms. Woodruff's understanding of life. After the vapid musings of many of the current bestsellers, Ghost in the Rainbow explores the extremes of human emotion with courage, humor and the rare sensibility of a Native American worldview. Without a doubt, one of the best novels of the year.

What a fabulous read!
What a fabulous read! Woodruff deftly intertwines her thrilling search for a serial killer with the internal journey of Native American writer Myra Whitehawk as her life disintegrates around her. The book never loses momentum and provides us with moments of genuine feeling and insight. I highly recommend it!

A Rainbow Connection
This is a thrilling story of one woman's determination to learn the truth behind the murder of a young child. Her search for truth plunges her not only into the world of a psychotic killer but into her own inner world where she must confront personal relationships, alcoholism and her desperate search for spiritual peace. This is also a story of the bond between a woman and her dog that transcends both time and bounderies of this physical world. Myra Whitehawk is one of the most compelling characters in my reading experience, and Ghost In The Rainbow is a book you won't want to miss. I'm glad I didn't!

Land Where My Fathers Died
Published in Hardcover by Context Books (06 May, 2002)
Authors: Joe Edward Morris and Joe Edd Morris
Average review score:

WOW! WHAT A STORY!
First time novelist? Unbelieveable for Morris' writing is that of a well disciplined, seasoned writer! The story of Jo Shelby Ferguson catches you and moves you along the search of his family roots. The reader moves with the main character feeling his frustration, his pain, his daring, his adventure, his every move imtimately. The author must have done his homework, especially with the authenticity of the adventure on the river barge and life in the Mexican prison. The skillful and creative use of language, the vivid descriptive scenarios linger long in the reader's memory. Woven through the tale are the moral lessons of determination above all odds, and commitment to the ultimate goal. The story opened a chapter of southern history unfamiliar to me of Yankee birth! For the superior writing and the historical perspective, I am a grateful reader. When is the next novel to appear?

Perfection!
This book brings the character of Jo Shelby Ferguson to life--right from the beginning of the first page. Morris has serious talent and lets it show. He takes Jo Shelby on a believable journey in search of his roots and creates an unforgettable journey from the Mississippi delta to Mexico. It's the (seemingly)true story of a man with an unquechable thirst to find out who he really is, and Ferguson is willing to do anything to accomplish it. Joe Morris' writing is up there with the best of the literary geniuses of the 20th century--F. Scott Fitzgerald, William Faulkner, and Zora Nealle Hurston, though it is a little faster paced than Faulkner. He (Morris) is sure to come out with other and greater works. He must!

A Memorable Saga
I found "Land My Fathers Died" to offer what many books of today do not. The novel treats readers to a wonderfully intriguing story told with grace and poetic deftness in describing a man's courageous, searching spirit. The descriptions of Mexico's vastness, ts colorful cities and its rapidly changing vistas of montains, deserts and plains are beautifully done and gives the mind many vivid pictures to recall. And one will well-remember the story's people who are given depth and "realnness." I felt the novel really moved along smoothly, with no slow stretches. Morris well shows what he can do with words and plot. I very much look forward to seeing his next work.

The Last Gunfighter: The Drifter (Wheeler Large Print Book Series)
Published in Paperback by Wheeler Pub (July, 2002)
Author: William W. Johnstone
Average review score:

Best Western I have read to date!
I thoroughly enjoyed this book. I have just finished reading it. Looks like the transition to the next installment is excellent. If you haven't read this book yet, be sure to put it on your reading list very soon. The characters are very well developed and the story is very exciting.

This book is Great!
I didn't think I'd read a book to match Ralph Compton's, but this one grabbed me quick. Another outstanding author. A page-turner of a western, and a terrific character in Frank Morgan. This is writing at its best.

Wonderful New Series!
Mr. Johnstone has topped his Mountain Man and Blood Bond series. Frank Morgan is a fresh new character and not a "Smoke Jensen" or "Preacher" knockoff. Once again, we see Mr. Johnstone's ability to make history come alive. Can't wait for the next installment coming in August 2000. Mr. Johnstone, please write faster! Thank you for a wonderful read!

Diving Cozumel (Aqua Quest Diving Series)
Published in Paperback by Aqua Quest Pubn (December, 1992)
Author: Steve Rosenberg
Average review score:

Informed Diver
This series is a must for the touring diver and the Cozumel guide gets you past the language barrier by providing reef descriptions and drawings as well as narrative on the reef and marine life. After three dive trips to Cozumel, I still use my guide to refresh my recollections both before and after the dive.
Now if we could only get the publisher to print this on logbook size pages.

This book was great to plan dives
Each time we got on the dive boat they asked where we would like to go. I used this book to plan our dives and each time the book was right about what we saw. I think the Top Side info could be better but for a diver this book is a must have!!!

Obviously written by someone who knows the subject
I note that one previous reviewer stated "A dive guide without good photographs is useless, and Rosenberg's photography is worth the price of the book." Whilst those sentiments are correct - on both counts, there are publishers who use a liberal supply of good photographs to mask an otherwise poor product which - in terms of being a diving guide, is neither well researched nor well prepared. Not so when it comes to Aqua Quest in general and "Diving Cozumel" in particular, because this is an excellent product.

There are many things a potential visitor needs to know before visiting any country - currency, climate, dining, accommodation, getting there, entry & exit requirements (and charges!), driving, shopping, and time difference (to mention just some). Then there is the additional information required by Scuba Divers - electricity supply, diving facilities, rental, boats, safety and, of course, some form of introduction to the underwater environment. How satisfying to find a book that has covered all of these points (and more) with the right degree of detail.

"Diving Cozumel" measures 10" x 7" and is, therefore, another diving guide in the medium size format favoured by Aqua Quest. As I have said elsewhere, these particular publishers, set high standards and demand all contributing authors/photographers maintain those standards at all times. This is, therefore, another worthy addition to the series.

The book is a well laid out and commences with an overall introduction to the Island of Cozumel which is both informative and interesting to read. This is followed by chapters on Accommodations, Dining and Sight-seeing before we get down to the subject of Diving. We are now at Chapter 5 and this sets the scene for anyone contemplating a Scuba Diving visit to the charming island of Cozumel with paragraphs on shore, boat and drift diving, currents, corals, preservation, equipment, safety, visibility and temperature.

Then we get down to specifics and Chapter 6 commences with a map of the island across two-pages on which are marked no fewer than 30 principle dive sites. This is followed by brief notes on each of those 30 sites - including the best places to see the "Splendid Toadfish" (Sanopus spledidus) - a species unique to Cozumel. With a final chapter devoted to Marine Life, the book then includes a number of Appendices containing that all-important emergency information, useful numbers and a list of diving facilities before concluding with a very useful selection of the most commonly used words and phrases (I really liked that!).

Altogether, this book contains all the information the potential visitor to Cozumel will require when contemplating such a trip - so have a good time.

A Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes : North America North of Mexico
Published in Paperback by Houghton Mifflin Co (15 January, 1998)
Authors: Brooks M. Burr, John P. Sherrod, Lawrence M. Page, Eugene C. Beckham, and Craig Wayne Ronto
Average review score:

ID only
Do not expect more than ID from the book. It is excellent at ID but that is all you will get for sure. I bought it for ID and it serves the purpose very well. One must also question the range maps since as explained in the text of the book they are compromised.

Finishing the Trilogy
It might interest the reader of this review (since your looking at the book) to know that while fresh water only represents about 1% of the available aquatic habitat on earth over half of the known species of fish live in it. I'll leave it up to you to find out why. Peterson Field Guides have a winning formula, find an expert, set them up with a good illustrator and see what comes out. This book finishes the trio that covers all of the fishes likely to be encountered by a North American fisherman, diver or naturalist. Like the Fishes of the Atlantic Coast and the Fishes of the Pacific Coast it is well organized, well written, all inclusive (of species) and as informative as space will allow. If you are curious about fishes in general or encounter fresh water fish with any kind of regularity you owe it to yourself to find out what they are. And, if you live in North America you should have this book.

A Field Guide to Freshwater Fishes
This book has informed me on the many fishes I catch ranging from California to New York. Every year when I go down to Arkansas I alwyas bring it with me on my fishing journeys so that I no whati am catching. It has over 700 illistrations and over 300 maps. In all of my searching for book this has been the most helpful book I have used. I recamend buying it for yourself. It will help you alot.

Frida Kahlo 1907-1954: Pain and Passion (Basic Series)
Published in Paperback by TASCHEN America Llc (June, 1996)
Authors: Andrea Kettenmann and Frida Kahlo
Average review score:

An introduction to Frida
The ambitious Taschen art series excels at giving an artists works in a nutshell, covering the biography of the artist as well as it's best known works. Following the succcesful formula that has brought you more than fifty artists, from Boteticelli to Andy Warhol, this book on Frida Kahlo is a basic primer. This is the perfect book for someone to learn a little something about the Mexican artist and popular icon of the familiar soaring bird eyebrows . The short biography covers the major events of her tumultous life and graphically displays her most well known works accompanied by some black and white photographs of her with husband Diego Rivera and other notables from her era. The organization and brevity of the book make for the basic cliff notes on Frida. Compiled and researched well the result is a tasteful book for the basics. The perfect book for the casual observer to find out if more information is needed to be learned about this fantastic Mexican artist. It is satisfying but if more detailed insight is needed I would recommend two other books. One is the book the editor relies upon heavily by Hayden Herrera which is the defintive book about Frida Kahlo entitled "Frida A Biography of Frida Kahlo." The other I would recommend for further exploration is by Martha Zamorra entitled Frida Kahlo: The Brush of Anguish." Zamorra's hard to find Spanish edition is superb and much better than the edited English version. Nonetheless, the Tashen version is a good quality book full of vibrant color on good paper printed in Germany on stock that will last many years. Recommended for the art student or anyone interested in this most tormented soul who left her mark in art for the world to enjoy.

Profusely illustrated and historically rich
This beautiful Taschen volume by Andre Kettenmann takes the reader through the tormented life of this famous Mexican painter, just as famous for her own artwork as for being the wife of Mexican artist, Diego Rivera. Her works, from the surrealist to the more naif, all of them sexually charged and driven by her life's tragedys and happy moments, are discussed along with the times of her life when she painted them, allowing everyone to take a peek into Frida's soul some 50+ years after her departure from this planet.

An excellent "basic".
Benedikt Taschen succeeded in producing a concise yet highly informative biography, which is an excellent departure point for people discovering Frida Kahlo's universe. Art and Spanish students alike will enjoy all the references to other written works, which will make their research easier. Let's not forget an excellent choice of pictures which supplement the photographic reproductions of the artist's work. The commentaries are equally useful. This book is an excellent basic to have in your bookcase and a great introduction to Frida Kahlo.

A Guide to Zuni Fetishes & Carvings, Volume I: The Animals & The Carvers
Published in Paperback by Rio Nuevo Publishers (June, 1998)
Author: Kent McManis
Average review score:

A Must Have
This is a must have book for beginner or established Fetish collectors. It is a great, quick resource. I did not get as much out of the second volume, but this one is a must have.

Outstanding Resource
This book, together with its successor volume, is the ultimate reference guide for the beginning or experienced collector. The author, who is probably the pre-eminent authority on the subject, provides clear, valuable information encompassing various segments of this remarkable art and contemporary artists. If you own or are considering purchasing these intriguing carvings, this little book (and the accompanying Volume II) should be your bible.

Outstanding Resource
This little book (together with Volume II) is the most valuable reference guide on the market today for either the beginning or experienced collector. The author, probably the leading authority on the subject, provides clear, useful information, encompassing various segments of the art and artists, necessary for the understanding and purchase of these remarkable objects. The two books are a joy to read and own.

Las Calles si, pero nada más?
Dirigido a: Federico Anaya Sánchez
